Our first big project as a newly formed business was the redesign of a CEO’s office. It was a large project that put our new business (and our marriage) to the test. We designed several pieces that addressed the client’s desire to have a modern feel as well as bring some warmth and functionality to the room. The CEO was a big fan on standing so we incorporated both a seated as well as a standing desk. We also replaced the small round conference table with a standing height collaboration table. The original furniture was very classic in design, but heavy and dark which made the space feel overly cramped.
The new desks were made from walnut and designed to give the appearance of hovering below the legs. The legs are welded and powder coated with a clear finish. MK, the cat, would like to make clear that this entire endeavor would have never succeeded without her intimate involvement.
The standing-height collaboration table was built “butcher block” style from white oak harvested from a tree that was standing dead on property near the shores of Lake Clinton outside of Lawrence, Kansas on February 17th, 2013. We incorporated an accent of purple heart in the table to tie-in the company’s logo color. The table is mounted on heavy industrial legs made from galvanized pipe, finished in a clearcoat sealer. The finish is designed to hold up to everyday use and the occasional coffee spill.
We replaced the heavy shelving in the original office with modern white-oak shelving tying in the purple accent and the industrial feel of the collaboration table.
Last is my favorite piece from the reboot. The CEO was a fan of Jeep Wranglers, so we salvaged some wrangler suspension springs and with the help of our good friend Neil we incorporated them into a printer stand. Of course, Midge and MK were integral to this process as well.
