We were asked to build some modern looking nightstands for a kid’s room with hairpin legs, white-washed sides and a dark top.   The wood for the project was Red Oak (downed by a storm on May 19th 2013 near Kirkside, Missouri) and Walnut (from a fallen tree in Parker, Kansas)

We started with making the boxes for the matching nightstands, using black epoxy to fill some of the knots to give the top some character.

Next was fashioning the hairpin legs from 3/8” round stock.

The joinery of the boxes was completed and clamped up (no screws here) and then the white wash was applied to the oak and the finish to the walnut.  Notice how the epoxy really accents the knot.

The various components for the newly bent hairpin were welded together and then painted red to match the client’s vision for the final piece.

Here is a picture of one of the completed nightstands.
