We came across a stockpile of this very interesting manufactured lumber called BauBuche at a going-out-of-business sale in KCMO. Originally, we purchased the wood to build a new table saw out-feed / assembly table for our shop, but once we saw how beautiful the wood was our minds started racing with ideas of what we could build.
Getting the wood home was no small chore since it is much heavier than natural wood. I included a pic of the brand-new out-feed table complete with bench-dog holes. The table has a white oak stain to help hide any future wear and tear. It has been a major upgrade to our shop.
We decided to build a couple pieces of furniture with our new-found treasure trove of wood. First would be a waterfall table/bench (waterfall gets its name from the way the grain of the wood appears to fall over the edge taking a 90 degree turn). Second was a coffee table with some funky metal legs. Third a modern style table/bench. Lastly, a unique accent table with a metal base.
The first step was to dimension the lumber and begin gluing the boards together. Once the glue was dry, we began the process of creating a water-fall look by creating a 45-degree miter joint and reinforcing it with floating tenons. Then with the help of some custom jigs and a lot of clamps we assembled the piece.
Once the glue-up was complete we rounded over the edges using a router and sanded four hours making sure that everything was ready for finishing.
The legs to the pieces were done in collaboration with our good friends over at Taylor Fire & Iron. Some of the pieces were welded by us, others by TFI, but they were all painted by TFI in their Lawrence shop.
We used a water-borne polyurethane on all the pieces to bring out the natural beauty of the birch and to provide a durable finish for each piece’s future owner.
